The following poem was written by Mrs. Nellie L. Smith in memory of her grandson Sgt. Emerson P. Smith.  It was first printed in the Marietta, Ohio, Times on February 2, 1944.

Somewhere out there in a foreign

land

Thousands of miles away

Our boy is sleeping his last long

 sleep

Awaiting the Judgment Day.

To think how he died that we

 might be free

Gave his life for the Red, White

and Blue,

Our hearts ache with pain when

we think of the past

Of the dreams that never came

true.

How should we all honor our

soldier dead.

Who have died for liberty,

Work, fight and pray till peace is

won,

May God hasten victory.
